Bzzz - BEEHIVE
The permanent installation of beehives in Schaarbeek aims at using hives and their products as monitor of natural processes in the city.
The idea is to observe, transform and publish the signals/outputs of the hive in scientific, artistic and conceptual ways.
Observing the hives directly (at the location, at dedicated moments), and more indirectly (cameras, microphones, etc.) including streaming on the internet is intended.
Direct “public moments” with interactive character – educational, community oriented, artistic.
To further stress the sustainable character of the project and make the observation and transmission of the bee signals independent of the electric grid, the installation of a photo-voltaic panel for renewable energy supply is intended. The panel is designed as roofing for the hives.
Moreover, the bees are interlinked to the project Spiradye – a spiral garden for the production of organic juice dye-sensitized photo-voltaic cells. Bees are mostly attracted to flowers containing anthocyanin, an organic molecule enabling photosynthesis and giving colour to a great variety of fruits and vegetables. These plants yield the dye for organic photo-voltaic cells and are complementary best pollinated by bees.
The use of the net of the reseau citoyen for data transfer can intertwine the locations virtually and conceptually.
